Monthly exposure records come from passive dosimeters that accumulate dose over a defined period and are read after that period to produce an official dose value. Pocket dosimeters provide real-time, current readings, which is useful for immediate monitoring, but they aren’t ideal for producing a reliable monthly record on their own. Thermoluminescent dosimeters and optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters, on the other hand, store the dose from the entire month and can be read at the end of the period to yield a precise monthly exposure. Using both TLD and OSL together gives cross-checks from two different materials and readout methods, increasing reliability and range coverage for the monthly dose record. The combination with pocket dosimeters isn’t necessary for the monthly record, and including all three adds redundancy without extra benefit for the official monthly exposure data.
